The largest city in Crete is Heraklion, the capital of Crete. About 140,000 people call Heraklion home. This city features the ruins of Knossos. This is a Bronze Age site that features a well preserved settlement that is a great highlight to see for history enthusiasts. For culture in this area Venizelous Square is a great place to visit. Among the top areas in this place is the historic Morosini Fountain. There are also two notable soccer teams in the area, OFI Crete and Ergotelis FC, which both play at the Olympic-built Pankritiko Stadium.

Chania is another of the notable places to see in a Crete holiday. Located at the northwestern part of Crete, this city is home to 55,000 people. The Old Town is one of the top places to see in Chania. The Venetian harbor and Venetian walls in the area are especially notable. In the modern part of Chania there are various attractions, including the Court House, the Public Gardens and the Dimokratias Street Clock Tower. Next in Crete is the town of Rethymno.

This is home to the Fortetza Castle, one of the largest castles in Crete. Various festivals are also held in Rethymno throughout the year, most notably being the Wine Festival in early July. Of course, it can be tough to find a room in this town during that time of year because of the great popularity of the event. Agios Nikolaos is another of the cities to see on a Crete holiday. Various Dorian Bronze Age remains can be found in this area. The historic Lake Voulismeni is located here and is a great place to visit for culture in Crete. The last of the cities to check out on your Crete holiday is the small town of Sitia. Located along the eastern part of Sitia, this town is home to the Kazarma, the fortress on the harbor that was occupied by the Venetians during the early part of the history of Sitia.
