The beach is not organised at all; no facilities are available, apart from the crystal clear sea and the bright sun, and if you wish to stay enough you should bring supplies with you (especially water!). You may camp on the beach, provided you respect the Monastery and you don't disturb the few families of locals living there. Access from Heraklion city or Mires city is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes. The only way to the beach is from Sternes; it is a difficult dirt track, 20 kilometres long which descends from a height of 1.000 metres, on the Asterousia mountains, to the level of the sea. The route is fascinating, the view breathtaking, but it is not recommended, if heights make you sick.
Koudoumas Beach
Hiking with the naturalist club of Heraklion Crete (www.fysi.gr): Our walk started from Kapetaniana village at the Asterousia mountains, 2km west of Kofinas peak and overlooking the Libyan Sea. We arrived after 3 hours in Agios Ioannis coastal village walking in a valley-gorge. In this first part of the route, it was possible, for those who want to walk the dirt road until Agios Ioannis. Then, together, by a coastal path through pine forest we arrived and finished our tour in Monastery Koudouma after 1,5 hours from Agios Ioannis. Along the way we visited the cave of Agios Antonios, in the chapel of stalactites and stalagmites. Moni Koudouma offered food to us. Then we returned with minibuses to Sternes village at the Asterousia mountains, on the way to Messara plain.
