| Xerokambos Village in East Crete |
|
This wonderful unspoilt part of East Crete is open and spacious. It has long sandy beaches & many small sandy coves, all set in front of some wonderful olive groves. Here you can spend idle and restful days recovering from the stresses of everyday life. There are but a few places to stay, the same with tavernas. There are two roads to go to Xerokambos. The road from Zakros to Xerokambos is a dirt track road (9 km). From Sitia, drive the Makrigialos and Piskokefalo road. After 10 km, in Episkopi, turn left to Handras, Ziros, Hametoulo and Xerokambos (45 km from Sitia, on a new surfaced road). There is a small temporary lagoon (dry from the end of May). In March and April tavernas are not necessarily open. Xerokambos beach life at its most tranquil in a dramatic setting. The ancients were certainly aware of the beauty of this spot and its important position on the shipping routes off the eastern shores of Crete, as the site has been inhabited since Minoan times (Read about the Hellenistic city of Xerokambos). The water Museum and the old Watermills in Zakros Village are worth visiting within the village and the Kato Zakros beach.  Â

So it makes sense to spend a couple of days at Sitia exploring a bit and being social, then heading down to Xerokambos to chill out and mostly stay put.
Thank you for quick and useful responses!
the beach is one of the best in Crete. Last 20 min drive to Xerokampos from Ziros is a 600m decent over 8km's...
Very steep good pawned road, SUPER VIEWS... but curvy.
When in Xerokampos do visit a fantastic restaurant by the through road (westside/lefthandside as you come down from Ziros) called Kostas. Great cheap food, and local fresh produce...
We stayed in Sitia last year, and on one day we met up with some friends who have a house about 30 minutes drive from Xerocambos and wanted to take us there. We fell in love with Xerocambos and on this year's trip we are staying there for a few days before our return stay in Sitia. We weren't put off by the drive at all.
If you want to be near Sitia, I think you might Xerocampos a bit too far. I haven't driven that road for many years, and have heard that it has improved, but it's still a long way, and twisty.
I would look at Palaikastro. It's a small town, hardly more than a village, and you don't need to stay in it: there are small resorts very nearby: Angathia and Xiona, with beautiful beaches and good tavernas There are plenty of possibilities for walks, including the Zakros gorge, and exploring possibilities everywhere in the hills and hill villages inland.
We're planning a trip to Crete in the first week of October, 2 adults early 40s, 1 14yr.old. We're outdoors people, interested in hiking and exploring, snorkelling, no interest in nightlife or shopping, but a little sightseeing and good food at a pleasant taverna is great. I dream of staying somewhere I can wander down to the ocean and swim within minutes of waking up...
We're also visiting my mother who lives in Maronia, a tiny village up in the mountains 12 km south of Sitia, on the main Sitia-Ierapetra road. So we don't want to be too far away from there, as we would like to pick her up (we'll be renting a car) and go sightseeing with her some of the days.
So - where should we stay? I've already fallen in love with the looks of Xerocambos. But is the road down there really as bad as it's made out to be, i.e. is it a bad place to use a base for exploring other places? I've also noted Kato Zakros, Palekastro, Makrigyalos, and Sitia of course. We're really not very fond of town life, though. Any tips?
Thanks in advance,
Laila
