If you ever go to Rethimno in the celebration of Aghios Ioannis Klidonas you will watch the performance dedicated to the aforementioned feast. During June locals organize cherry celebrations in the valleys of Ammari where they produce the given fruit. The celebrations preserve their festive character by organizing feasts with traditional music and dances. Do not miss to visit a local wedding party, if you are ever invited, to taste the local mezes (tapas) and drink a glass of wine in honor of the newlyweds. The cultural events are well organized and create an amazing atmosphere. They are prepared by newly established municipalities where many well known artists or traditional singers are invited. In case that your stay in Rethimno is in the Carnival period, you will experience the frenzied carnival atmosphere and the wild lost treasure hunting which extends over the whole city and ends up in a great parade. Visitors coming here in summer will enjoy the rich entertainment, folklore, engaging program of the wine feast organized every year during August. They will be able to taste plentiful wine offered by local producers. They can also visit the villages and experience impressive traditional feasts: "kazania" (dixie) takes place in September where locals distil tsikoudia (local strong drink) while during spring “koura” (sheep shearing) takes place in mitata (the stockyards where shepherds used to spend winter).
