Hiking in West Crete

Viena Beach, PaleochoraWalking from Krios beach to Kedrodasos beach and Elafonisi:

The distance from Paleochora to Krios Beach (Koundoura) is 7km.

Krios - Elafonisi 10kms

Time: 5-6 hours.

During the summer months there should be no problem about getting the ferry back to Paleochora. But if you are doing the walk early or late in the season, you shouldn't rely on the ferry, which may not run if the weather is windy and the sea on that exposed corner turbulent. You should be prepared in a pinch to walk both ways.

If you drive, there is a slightly complicated road (even for Greeks - no sufficient road signs), Paliohora-Maniataniana-Elafonisi and the last 2-3km is going down on a mountain side dirt road. Not recomended for small rented cars. Going up is out of the question unless you have a strong Jeep or car.

Follow the route passing the Chapel of Agios Loannis and keep following the markers and signs until you reach the famous tropical lagoon of Elafonissi with its pink coloured sands.

After 40 min from Krios beach you first reach Vienna beach.

The Monastery Chrissoskalitissas looks above Elafonisi beach and is about 10kms far from there.

-1 #3 Paleochora to GialosJack 2013-05-25 09:38
I have walked half the route westwards from Paleochora to the Gialos area where there are some good beaches and a taverna and loads of those plastic greenhouses. The road to that point is quite flat no problem at all. The bit between Elafonisi and the greenhouse area would be be much rougher and hilly. it does not look particularly daunting from the boat.

The last time there I intended to take the excursion boat to Elafonissi and walk back later in the early evening ~17:00 I reckoned, but at the time the boat was not running, early season, so I never did. You can't assume it's daily.

Mapwise the distance is 9 miles, the last half being on the road.

-1 #2 Walking in summerNadia 2013-05-25 09:37
April, May, and late September-October are the best times for walking. But if you go at July, the ferry should run pretty reliably.

The walk will be more difficult in the heat than the Samaria gorge: there's a lot of up and down, and there will be very little shade.

If you decide against it, another nice walk from Paleochora, shorter and easier than the Elafonisi walk, is up the road to Anydri and back down to the coast through the Anydri gorge. There is a lovely Byzantine church in Anydri, and you can have lunch in the excellent taverna (used to be the schoolhouse) where there is plenty of shade.

-1 #1 In july...Bulader 2013-05-25 09:35
We are doing this early July, so should be OK.(Boat wise)

However 6 miles in July heat might be too much! (We walked the Samaria George last August - hard work! I've run Marathons but that was tough!)

I thought this walk was about 3-4 miles!

I see you are also Destination Expert for Berlin - we have just booked flights/hotel for 3 night trip over New Year so hope fully you can help me out there too!!
