Down in the gorge the walk also leads past the remains of the rarely visited Minoan settlement of Lenika and a climbing-detour to a Minoan Fort (Kastelas).
The walk is very well waymarked with signs and red dots (special thanks to Stella's Traditional in Kato Zakros!), and it is fairly easy to walk. However, at one point in the gorge you will have to resort to climbing down about 10 meters of a rock cliff, assisted by a few iron handholds. Therefore the walk is not suitable for children.
Take a good amount of water with you, because there is virtually no shadow on the way.
The path was down in a gorge with steep, rugged cliffs on either side. Along the upper sections of the cliffs were hand cut caves that had been used to inter the dead in ancient times.
There were also goats roaming on the cliffsides foraging for food. I loved hearing the tinkling of the goat bells. It was amazing to look up and see a goat standing on a precipitous ledge. We saw one shepherd with his dog.
Several miles along the path we camp upon the ruins of an ancient Minoan village. Hiking along the gorge was an incredible experience. No one else was out there.
It was almost like stepping back in time.
