The municipal district of Arkalochori is the seat of local government and contains six communities; Houmeri, Archontiko, Arkalochori, Gasi, Mousouta and Agia Semni. With the municipal district of Patsidero, the population amounts to 4.205 residents and it is the only district that presents augmentative demographic change in the decade 1991-2001. The population has increased by 400 residents (11.3%).
In Houmeri, the first village that the visitor meets when arriving from Heraklio, we can find a marvelous place to rest by the fountain, the natural source of the village, found precisely under the "Houmeriani Kefala". The water that runs down from the heart of the mountain is healthy and pure. Continuing a little further north on the dirt road, at a distance of roughly 100 metres to the left, one can see the cave that on many occasions provided a sanctuary for villagers during difficult moments of Ottoman and German occupation.

The best spot in Old Hersonissos is definitely the round village square, surrounded by little tavernas and with a fountain in the middle. The square on summer evenings it is full of life. Locals and tourists fill the tavernas to try tasty Cretan dishes, drink the local wine and have fun with their friends. In recent years the tavern owners have organised a Cretan evening once a week, usually on Mondays, with live music and traditional dances.
