Anidri a gorge for beginners.
If you are not sure already whether you enjoy walking through a gorge and you want to avoid to start with Samaria gorge you should try out our tip! Furthermore you are not someone among two or three thousands of walkers like in the Samaria gorge. The walk itself takes about 4 hours approximately. We advise you to carry enough water in your backpack!

Starting from Paleohora you have to keep east, pass the Camping-site and follow the concrete street to the left up to Anidri. This street is surrounded by steep and curt rocks and further on by wide olive groves. You will have a wonderful view over the mountains.

Right at the entry-sign of the village Anidri` the route to the gorge proceeds in a path starting on the right side of the street. But it does not take much time to visit the small village. Since 1996 the Kafenion in the former school-building is open. The food offered here is typical for Crete and moreover very delicious. Especially the `dakos_ is worth trying it. You should not miss to take your time here for a refreshment and enjoy the wonderful view through the mountain valley to the sea!

Anidri was founded by two brothers who managed to escape from the blood-revenge ('vendetta') in their home town Chora Sfakion. Even nowadays many of the few people living there are related to each other and so have the same surname.

It is also worth visiting the chapel of St. George from the 14. century. It's wall-paintings are still in good shape. You can get the key for the chapel in the neighbourhood. With a few cents you support to keep the chapel restored.

As already said  the path leading you to the gorge starts right at the entry-sign of the village. Do not be irritated by the few paths supposed to be the right way but keep the direction to the valley. After a few hundred metres you will reach a plateau to your right which is located above the gorge. On the left side of this plateau you will find a small hidden path. The first 100 metres you will have to push branches aside to keep on walking. Instead of usual signs at the beginning blue and further on red marks show you the way to the gorge itself. In addition to this you will find small stone-pyramids - they lead you the way which is easier to pass. You will see that this is very useful further on in the gorge where you have to climb short distances.

Soon you will reach the ground of the dried out river - the beginning of the gorge. Certainly you will enjoy the silence and the whole atmosphere. Some shady places invite you to rest and small, easy climbing-distances make this trip a little 'adventure'. If you need a refreshment keep following the signs on the rocks which lead you through the narrow exit of the gorge to Anidri beach. Unfortunately this place is not as lonely as it has been two years ago. In 1998 they began to build a street starting at the camping site along the coast to that beach. So now you can find here even a `kantina_ in which they offer drinks und snacks. Nevertheless it is a wonderful place to rest and you should not leave Paleohora without this impression.

Take the bumpy road mentioned above to return to Paleohora.

Reached the hill, you have a fantastic view over the coast beyond, Anidri beach and Paleohora.
