There is also a gravel road and you will need a decent vehicle if you want to approach the area without the boat. From Kastelli-Kissamos in western Crete, drive west by 7 kms to the village of Kaliviani, here take the gravel road north-west along the peninsula to Cape Ligari. At the end of the road, park near Agia Irini chapel, and take the signed foot path for about 3 hours. This is rocky coastal country with low lying plants, without shade. Be prepared with plenty of water. As far as the times of the year are concerned, the best time is in the spring: the weather is still cool and the vegetation is at its best. The worst time is in the middle of the summer during a heat wave. The weather in Crete during the summer months is very hot and the area arid and dry. Always study the maps for the correct distances before you set off. Hiking on this peninsular is beautiful, there are ocean and cliff views, the area is covered in thyme, oregano and wild flowers, and there are views over Kissamos Bay to the Rodopos peninsula. After a 10km route (from Kaliviani village) that takes your breath, you're over the lagoon of Balos. The panoramic view of Balos and the island of Gramvousa skyline is also breathtaking. From this panoramic point begins a 1km long stone path that leads you to the beach or better in paradise. In Balos Beach and at the Venetian fortress it is busy in the summertime but manageable, and once the ferry docks it’s easy to explore the tiny island in relative peace for a couple of hours. Hike to the top of the fortress on the islands of Gramvoussa for unparalleled panoramic views of Balos beach (also known as the Blue Lagoon), noted as one of the most pristine in the world. Those who enjoy snorkelling will revel in the shallow, crystal clear waters here. Walking path : Kaliviani village - Balos beach-lagoon. Time: 3 hours
