The Battle of Crete and National Resistance Museum

Heraklion city The Museum of the Battle of Crete and National Resistance (1941-1945) was founded by the Municipality of Heraklion in May 1994.

The museum's aim is to collect, preserve and exhibit relics from 1941-1945 in an appropriate manner, as well as to document and disseminate information on the people's struggle during the Battle of Crete and the German-Italian occupation.

In addition to presenting a range of material witnesses to the past, the museum aims to cultivate interest and respect for the history of Crete.

Seeing the images of the villages of Crete with men facing execution made me see the war monuments in a new light.

Just around the corner from the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion this small Museum should be on your itinerary, just to learn a little of what happened to the Cretans who resisted the Germans when they occupied the island from 1941 to 1944. The Germans burnt villages and massacred civilians as punishment for their resistance. The Museum displays hundreds of photographs and huge amounts of text, mostly in Greek, with the odd document in English, including a declaration of surrender advising that the Germans had capitulated on 9th May 1945. There are also some artefacts from the war, including weapons used by all involved.
