Τhe Heraklion Museum of Visual Arts, is a non profit organisation which was established in May 2000 by K. Schizakis.

Its key purposes is to become a welcome space for each and every citizen, a meeting place for artists, art lovers and friends, a place of cultural exchange and collaboration in a spirit of solidarity, offering aesthetic and spiritual education and entertainment. This is hoped to be realised via the organisation and implementation of research educational and training seminars, and lectures on matters concerning art and artistic activity, the organisation of conferences, and concerts, and a publishing activity, which are being planned, whilst offering the Museum's space for exhibitions, of other collections of state-run or private greek and foreign museums.

In the hope that this effort will be welcomed by the public of Heraklion, we inaugurate the opening of the Museum and its activities starting with the exhibition of works by Cretan artists part of the K. Schizakis collection, which form the greater part of the Museum's property.

• The support of every cultural and artistic activity and especially the promotion and strengthening of the visual arts.
  
• The projection and the preservation of works of artists of Cretan origins.
  
• The presentation and preservation of the work of artists of Cretan descent.
  
• The collaboration with other Museums on a national and European scale.
  
• The collaboration with other EEC members for joint participation in European programs for the promotion of common causes, the exchange of information, ideas and experiences.
  
• The organization of retrospective exhibitions of important modern and contemporary Greek artists.
  
• The organization of research and educational seminars and lectures on issues dealing with art and artistic creativity.
  
• The publication of monographs and catalogues of art and artists.
