| Agios Ioannis Theologos Monastery, Heraklion |
|
Continue on this road for three kilometres and you'll come to the popular traditional village of Anopolis, with many lovely old-style shops offering various local arts and crafts. Southeast of the village of Anopolis, in a lovely tree-line valley, is the monastery of St. John Theologian (Agios Ioannis Theologos) – a site well-worth seeing. It was first a part of the Saint George monastery located by the mouth of Aposelemis river a few kilometers to the north, but around 15th - 16th century the monks, because of constant raids by pirates, moved from St. George’s monastery to the monastery of St. John (Agios Ioannis), taking with them the icon of the saint which exists until today. Although it has experienced the cruelty of the Turks during the Turkish occupation of Crete, the monastery still operates today. It is built in this beautiful valley at an altitude of 170m. According to one version, the monastery initially belonged to the monastery of St. John in Patmos, hence the name. However, it is likely that it was a dependency of the seaside monastery of Agios Georgios, near the exit of Aposelemis river, the temple of which was destroyed by the Germans in 1940. Anopolis village is ideal for those wishing to spend quality time in a small, peaceful, quiet Cretan village with friendly kafeneions yet still be within easy access of great beaches and beach resort towns. Anopolis is also well positioned as a base for many excursions throughout the island. The surrounding areas of the village are ideal for walking, bird-watching, cycling and other country-based natural activities.
