A week here in Makrigialos area will give you a base to tour everywhere from Iraklion to Vai. We truly made the week a brilliant Cretan experience. My sister and I flew into Sitia from Athens and our rental car was awaiting our arrival. The drive from Sitia to Makrigialos gave us time to enjoy the beautiful countryside. Upon arriving at Makrigialos and the beautiful courtyard, we immediately had a light lunch by the pool of the Hotel we stayed. That and a cold Mythos beer had us relaxed already!
From Makrigialos. you can go visit Knossos for the day and still have time to stop in Heraklion to look around the town, although the streets in this town are very narrow.
Another day, try driving to Moni Toplou, an active monastery, dating back to the 1400's. From there, it is a short drive to Vai - famous for its palm forest right next to the most beautiful beach. Each day trip from Makrigialos leaves you plenty of time to come back for a wonderful meal around Makrigialos, and possibly card playing with your new friends at the resort!
Ask at the hotel you stay for the best time to go to the market in Sitia for the best value in name-brand clothing and fresh fruits/vegetables.
If the weather isn't right for a day by the pool or beach, check out a drive to Lassithi Plateau. It is lenghy, but worth it. You truly get to see the island without all the "touristy" traps. Lassithi's major sight is the Dikteon Cave, where legend has it - Zeus was raised. There is also fantastic weavings to purchase along the way.
Check out the village of Kritsa close to Agios Nikolaos, the main city of Lassithi Prefecture, for great leather shopping. There is an outstanding Byzantine church just outside of town that should not be missed - Church of Panagia Kera. The frescoes are indescribable. If your feet don't hurt from shopping, you can always stop by Lato, north of Kritsa to check out the ancient city.
On your way back to the airport at Sitia, you can find time to tour this perfect escape. You find the most amazing bakery here.
