The center and district of the Geropotamos Municipality. It’s located at an altitude of 75 m and on the 24th km of the old road Heraklion-Rethymnon, on the left bank of Avlopotamos river, where there was a “perama” (a river crossing). In the same position today, there is the bridge which connects the village with Melidoni and Panormo. The Venetians mentioned it as “Vassilico Perama” (Royal Crossing).

The stagnant water of the river used to cause great problems of malaria in the previous ages.

It was reported as “Vassilico Perama” belonging in the Destrict of Mylopotamos by Fr. Barozzi in 1577. It was also reported as “Vassilico Perama” with 193 inhabitants in 1583 by Kastrofylakas and as “Perama” with 295 due fatigues in 1630 by Bassilicata.

In the Turkish census of 1671 it was mentioned as Pereme with 21 poll taxes. In 1881 it was referred in the municipality of Melidoni with the population of 14 Christians and 21 Turks. In 1900 there is no mention for Perama. In 1920 we find it with the same name as the base of a rural municipality with 82 inhabitants. In 1928 belongs to the community of Angeliana with 157 inhabitants. In 1940 it is againe the base of the established community, with 283 inhabitants. In 1951 the population was 410 inhabitant, in 1961, 614 people, in 1971, 955 inhabitants and in 1981, 1127 inhabitants. The rapid population growth of the village has to do with the highway Rethymno - Heraklion, which was launched the third decade of the 20th century.

In Perama the most sadistic and wildest Turks of Mylopotamos used to live. That’s why the Mylopotamites used to call Perama, the Entrance of the Angel of Death or the Entrance of Satan. Oxouzides Turks used to lurk there, attacking to the Cretans, who travelled to Rethymno for robbing and torturing them.
