Archaeological Museum in Agios Nikolaos, East Crete Lasithi

Agios Nikolaos MuseumArchaeological museum in Agios Nikolaos City: The town is home to the finest archaeological museum in Crete founded in 1970 and consisting of eight rooms. The collection contains recent finds, mostly from eastern Crete. The finds are in chronological order beginning with the Neolithic era, Minoan remains, and ending with Greco-Roman finds.

One of the museum's most famous exhibits is the Goddess of Mirtos. This libation vessel is in the form of a female figure and was discovered at the Bronze Age settlement at Fournos, near Mirtos.

The museum also contains important specimens of the Daedalic Period (seventh century B.C.) when, for a brief period of time, Crete led the Greek world in setting the foundations of the great art of sculpture for the next centuries. The head of a clay statue of a woman, considered to be one of the masterpieces of Greek art, is displayed in the museum.

A good introduction to the history of the Minoans. It does get crowded as it is a popular excursion.
The ground in parts is uneven and some of the stairs are more of a climb than a step so wear sensible shoes. Not a place for flip flops.

It also gets hot and some exhibits require you to queue in the sun so bring a hat and sun cream!

Unless we missed something, it is the Folklore Museum that is small and by the tourist ofice in town, whilst the Archaeological Museum (situated behind Erithrou Stavrou) is being extensively refurbished with some major building work going on.

We really enjoyed the Archaeological Museum, but we definitely a little surprised with how small it was! My husband and I were actually rushed through the Museum (a huge pity) because there was a school room behind us (quite large). It was a little busy when we went, and I recommend trying to go at a time when it's not so busy, maybe early in the morning. Also, Monday's and Wednesday's the shops close early, so if you want to do some shopping I recommend going on another day.

Only visit if you are very intersted in old coins and broken pots. Most of the museums I have visited in Greece are the same; dry and boring. I love history and enjoy visiting museums in the UK, but there is no social history attached to the artifacts in this museum.

0 #1 Could be a lot betterJoel 2012-08-10 18:25
We were passing the museum and decided to visit. It now charges 3€ each. Like a lot of Greek museums, there is no thread to follow. It consists of cabinets of pottery and jewellry. Information is in Greek and English but is not well done and is dislointed

The most interesting aspect was a lady who spent all her time prowling around the exhibits guarding them with her life. She shouted at my wife for touching the glass with her finger and then dismissed from the museum a woman who had sat down on a step to rest from the heat.

Best to avoid
