The village of Anidri in soutwest Crete is situated about 5 kilomerers east of Paleochora, on the Kandonos (or Rodovani) - Prodomi - Anidri - Paleochora route. Especially the last part of the route from Anidri to Paleochora, where you drive through a gorge, is very pretty.

It is a very quiet area with winding roads, a green surrounding and lots of goats. In the village along the main road there is a water tap with drinkable water. Inside the village there is a large taverna and there are a few places where you can rent a room.

One of the attactions of the village is the walk you can make through a gorge to the beach and to a nearby church on a hill. The main attaction is probably the Byzantine church that you can reach by foot from a path that leads from the taverna. Inside there are some amazing old fresco's.

Activities

* Walk to Anidri beach (2 hours), a superb horseshoe of sand, with canteen and umbrellas in summer

* The laid-back resort of Paleochora (5km away) has jewellery shops, tavernas, bars, beach disco and ferry

* Walk up to the monastery of St John at Azogires (2 hours; key to museum from Alpha taverna), a lovely introductory hike, or follow the signed ‘E4’ footpath along the south coast to the ancient city of Lissos, catching a ferry back from Souyia (6 hours)

* Using the ferry, hike the famous Samaria gorge (from Ayia Roumeli) or the quieter Ayia Irini gorge (from Souyia), or catch the weekly ferry to Gavdos, a remote islet and Europe’s southernmost point

* Hike or drive to the tropical beach at Elafonissi - early, to beat the crowds

* Visit frescoed Byzantine chapels at Anidri (key from taverna) and Panagia near Kadros taverna (key from neighbouring house)

* Hire a mountain bike or trail bike in Paleochora and explore the mountain tracks (get the Harms map)
