In-between the beach days. If you just want to stay away from the beach, want to move yourself a little bit, enjoy a few nice views and want to experience pure nature in a relaxing way, we suggest the following walk. The simple walk takes about 3 1/2 hours. Don't forget to carry enough water with you!

The starting point of this walk is Azogires. How to get there? Either you take the 6.00-am-bus from Paleohora heading towards Omalos a few days a week or - if you don't like to get up so early! - try to get a lift to Azogires. The third possibility is offered by taxi. Anyhow if you do not take the bus you should not start too late, so that you will not be burned by the high noon sun.

You can take the opportunity to visit the cave of the 99 St. Fathers high above the village if you do not want to start with the walk right away. The walk itself starts about 100 metres before you arrive at the first houses of Azogires. The path leads you to the museum and a church built into a cave (please watch the sign!).

On your (shady) way there you pass the evergreen Platane-tree, which branches form crosses. Shortly after an old olive-oil-manufacturing place to the left you reach the church that is integrated into the rocks. In there - it is said - the 99 St. Fathers were praying. You can see them on the altar's wall. Furthermore you are going to see the grave of a Cretan resistance fighter, who became famous during the war against the Turkish force and a small museum.

This museum shows interesting pieces of Cretan history as well as the heir of a priest from Azogires who did hide the young people of this village from the Turkish invaders and gave all his belongings to Azogires before he died. You can ask for the key to get into the museum in one of the tavernas 'downtown'.

To proceed with the walk you have to follow the path leading you out of this place and later on up the hill. After having passed a few ruins you reach a goat's fence (please close it again!). Some metres behind you have to keep right following the blue marks on the stones.

Since we are no biological scientists we are not able to tell you the names of the various and numerous flowers, trees and animals on this way - except some butterflies and lizards - but the landscape (and that is what we can tell you for sure!), you will walk through, is simply awesome.

Reaching a few ruins you can enjoy the fantastic view over the valley (maybe under the little-orange-tree). After having surrounded half of the hill, you can see Paleohora ahead of you but far away. Some minutes later a nice tree offers a lot of shade over your path and invites you to rest a while and enjoy yourself.

Following the blue marks again you will be lead to a tiny pool surrounded by a lot of Oleander-bushes and later on to olive groves. After having crossed this field you reach the first house of Anidri and - willing or not - have to cross it’s courtyard. Now keep right heading south-west to Paleohora.

Do you need one more challenge (not having enough, yet?)? Why not going down right through the Anidri-gorge and take a bath at Anidri-beach (almost alone!) and go back to Paleohora along the coast?

Well, our walk, however, leads you to the new street from Anidri to Paleohora. To your left and right you will pass olive groves before going through a gorge. Only in spring you will find some water in the river beside your way.

The street passes the Camping-site and leads you back to the village.
