Kalami Village: All the mountainous area of Viannos - Simi is of outstanding natural beauty. Most villages like Kalami, still keep the old traditional architectural style while a good number of old churches - some with well preserved frescoes - can be found. Small ravines with running water and rich vegetation is another characteristic of the area. A visit to the village of Kalami is south east Crete is a strange experience. It is situated on the route Ano Vianos - Pefki - Kalami - Ierapetra route. This village is as good as deserted by its inhabitants. You can walk through the empty street and see the old houses that are falling apart and that have their doors open. There is a running water tap in the village for the water supply though. Here and there there are still grape vines growing or you see a plant. The only building that is in sort of a good state is, off course, the village church. This is also the building that attracted us to the village because we wanted to go an take a look at it. There are supposedly a few more people living here than the two old ladies that we have seen. They are running some kind of kafenion. We didn't see anybody else while we walked around the village. In the valley on the edge of the village of Kalami we noticed an old brick wall, that could possibly be from Venetian times. Text: Partialy writen by Hans Huisman
