Once at your destination you will be at Preveli beach, but you will still have to climb a hill to get to the other side to "Palm Beach". At the beginning of this road they will tell you that the beach is 3 km away. Don't be fooled: the road is much longer that that! Only if you are a well trained walker you might want to try, but be reminded that you have to climb over mountains up and down, plus you have to walk back again. The other possibillity is to take the paved road on the right side. You will pass the abandoned Lower Preveli Monastery and a little bit farther down the road there is a sign pointing you to Palm Beach. Don't think you are there yet, because after you have parked your car you still have a long way to go! There are many, many steps down on the old stairs (and up again!!!) if you want to reach the beach. The views are very rewarding though. And because of this don't think you are going to be alone on Palm Beach, because it's a busy beach. Palm Beach is a sandy cove with a river running through it, at the end of Kourtaliotiko Gorge. The area resembles a tropical lagoon with its palms, oleanders, waterfalls and stream which flows into the sea.

According to reports from the Fire Brigade and Local Authorities, the historical palm forest of Preveli was burned to 60-70%, along with a thousand hectares of cultivations, animals and olive trees.
The fire broke out on Sunday morning at the village of Gianniou, near Plakias, and was under control by Sunday afternoon, after having burned thousands of hectares. The fire broke out in four different spots at the same time..
I am ashamed of how we ended the splendid palm tree forest at Kourtalioti Gorge mouth, near the Monastery Preveli.
The photos I took in July, about a month before the disaster, and picture after it is proof of this shame and the expression of grief ....
Shame on those who destroyed and plundered the national natural wealth. Shame on those who neglected, shrugged and left the disaster to become a tragedy.
Shame on us that we left all of them to remove the oxygen from our nose, the colour from our eyes ...
The beach is a bit scruffy, but the whole point about this beach is it is where the Monks from the monastory led the British troops to escape in a submarine from the Germans.
The Germans then took revenge by killing the local people and cutting the monastory of from everyone else. The monks survived by fishing off the beach at night, and using the land within the monastory for growing food.
Overall, although a very confident driver, I would never travel the road again. No roads in Crete are great and there are many mountainous roads, but this was something else. It was very dangerous and we were just glad to be back in one piece. Go down it at your own risk!
Onec we got to Preveli Palm Beach, it was a steep climb of 10 minutes to get over the cliff and down onto Palm Beach. I have to say that I have seen many better beaches and it just wasn't worth the trip (photo attached).
We read that the trip was long but didn't realize how narrow the roads would be. My husband drove and I prayed, so I was much less nervous after the long haul there. So he would rate Preveli Beach differently than I have. It was a lot of work driving there. I guess if we go back we'll go by boat. How sensible of the lovely people of Plakias to provide boat transportation. I did dearly love the beach, but it was a lot of work.
After the car, there is a 10 minute walk. But I'm still so glad we went. We were alone there, it was quite Idyllic. All the beach loungers were just sitting there waiting for us to drag them to the location of our choice. Oh, I also want to do some kayaking up the Limni River next time. Beautiful.
