The village of Pano Gouves (look Kato Gouves) lies 100 metres above sea level, 20 km from Heraklion. The village is built on the western flanks of Ederi hill. The name of the settlement comes from the word Gouva which means a hollow in the earth. During the middle ages it also meant a hole in which people stored their wheat. The earliest reference of the village is that of Guves in 1387 in documents of the Dukes archives of Chandax. Later on, in 1577, Fr. Barozzi mentions "Guvos" in the district of Pediados, and then "Guves" in the 1583 Register, with 252 inhabitants. Finally, in 1630, Vassilikata refers to "Vuves'. It is continuously inhabited since Venetian times and has a population of about 400 residents today. However, the area was inhabited long before, as archeological excavation has revealed. In a place called Fig Tree, northeast of Gouves village, a curved tomb of rectangular shape has been located and brought to light by the excavator. It contained three larnakes (clay coffins) one of which was decorated on both sides with a bird that holds on its beak a papyrus flower. This find today is displayed and can be admired in the Archeological Museum of Heraklion. A vaulted tomb with an urn of the 7th century BC was discovered in the plain region, while by the coast the most important settlement of Late Minoan period of the whole municipality has been revealed. On the right bank of Aposelemis river there are today the remnants of Agios Georgios church, a church that belonged to a monastery with the same name but has been abandoned when it become unsafe and gave its place to today's monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos of Anopoli village.
