| Inland Water in the Island of Crete |

The island of Crete is due to its shape and geographical location and due to its geomorphology and geological history not really suited for large masses of inland surface water. High evaporation and karstic erosion threaten any larger water mass here, and even the Mediterranean is suffering from water level losses due to the evaporation and insufficient influx from the Nile and other rivers. The rivers on Crete, in summer almost all dry, are subject to frequent flooding in the spring months, when the snows on the higher mountains melt, replenishing subsurface reservoirs and raising the water table. There are two larger lakes on Crete, one natural (Lake Kourna, near the town of the same name), and one man-made (Bramiana reservoir near Ierapetra). Lake Botomou (near Ano Zaros) is fairly small. Lake Kirtomados is a small reservoir near Hania. Lake Voulismeni in the town of Agios Nikolaos is connected to the sea and possibly an old volcano shaft, some say it is bottomless and connected to the caldera of Santorini. Yet some features on the island are proof that in the pleistocene there were several large inland lakes, today almost all visible as the large and fertile plains relatively high above sea level (Lasithi, Katharo, Omalos Viannou Plateau and Omalos Plain). The many gorges are almost exclusively of fluvial origin, best visible perhaps in the Ierapetra fault, where the wall of mountains is broken by the tight and most recent Ha Gorge (Monastiraki) and Kavoussi Gorges, which are both inaccessible from the bottom end, where they cut through the mountain slope in a tight V.
