Sirikari - Polirinia Gorge in Chania, West Crete

Polirinia gorgeThe village of Polirinia is situated 7 kilometers south of the town of Kissamos in the west of Crete. You can reach it by driving to and through Kissamos.

If you want an extra walk in the area it is also possible to walk up the gorge of Sirikari (or Tsihliana gorge) from Polyrinia. You have two options:

1. Walk down from the centre of the village until you reach a road below which you will follow for about 2 km. I won’t be more precise because there are several routes from the village centre to the road. Once on the road follow the directions below.

2. Drive back out of the village for 100 m until you see a sign for Cemetery of ancient Polyrinia. Drive down this road, descending into the valley. After around 1.5km the road will cross the valley to the left (it’s a small riverbed). Do not follow the main road but bear on your right (so stay on the right side of the valley) and follow and older unpaved track. It will take you to a fence which you will need to cross in order to get to the path to the gorge. There is a sharp right turn at this point. If you follow this for 50 metres (going steeply up) you will be able to park your car by a chapel.

Cross the fenced area, past an electric transformer and after 200 m cross an ancient bridge and this is the start of the walk. It is clearly marked. You can go as far as you want but considering that you will need to walk back I suggest walking for an hour to 90 minutes then turning back. This should will cover the lower part of the gorge which is the most spectacular. If you want to carry on to the end it will take you about 2 hours to reach the road near the church of Agios Konstantinos, not far from the village of Sirikari.

Tsikhliana Gorge or Sirikari - Polirinia gorge as this article describes, is a canyon which stretches between the villages of Sirikario in the south and Polirrinia in the north, the latter a Doric settlement with an Akropolis on top of its lookout mountain. The gorge is located in the north-west of the island, close to the coastal town of Kissamos.

The Tsikhliana Gorge is wider than your regular Cretan gorge, measuring up to 800m across. Still it remains very impressive, as the wall which enclose it are almost vertical and several hundred metres high. The upper part of the gorge follows a creek, which (at least in May) still carries water but which vanishes in the central part of the canyon.

Thanks to its usage as connecting route between the villages in the past, the gorge has well kept trails at its bottom. Some parts - especially near Polirrinia - are paved. The main section, however is regular rocky hiking terrain, which in the upper part is sometimes a bit tricky to orientate in. Near its northern end you find an old bridge, spanning the creek bed, and which dates back to Roman times.

Everywhere - like in all the Cretan canyons and gorges you find towers, overhangs and caves in the enclosing walls, which reach a height of some 200m at their maximum.
Tsikhliana Gorge can be hiked from either the north or the south. The respective trailheads, Polirrinia in the north and Sirikari village in the south are connected by a narrow mountain road which passes the village of Kalathenes.

From Chania follow the coastal highway E65 westward to Kissamos.
In Kissamos follow the signs to Polyrrinia and Kalathenes
For the Sirikario Trailhead pass Kalathenesand follow the signs. There is a parking lot near the little church outside (south of) the village
