This speleo (Precipice) / cave was discovered in 1993 by the French club Catamaran and is located by Atzinolakas, region of Melidoni village in the Fre Municipality (north-east foot of Lefka Ori). On the one hand it had an important speleological / explorative interest; on the other hand it was extremely difficult to explore with an expedition team, especially because of its depth.

At the location of "Atzines" at an altitude of 1500 m, in the foothills of the Lefka Ori Mountains, Chania Prefecture, close to the village of Melidoni in the district of Apokoronas, was discovered in 1990 - and fully explored by 1998 - the deepest cavern in Greece, the famous Gourgouthakas, 1208 meters (3965 feet) deep and 900 meters in length!

The Cave of St. John the Hermit or Xenos, in Akrotiri, Chania Prefecture, is located just a few hundred meters away from Arkoudospilios cave. This is located near the abandoned Katholiko Monastery.
