The cave of Sfendoni near the village of Zoniana in the district of Mylopotamos (47 km from Rethymno in the direction of Perama - Axos) displays 14 halls, richly ornamented with stalactites and stalagmites. It is 550 m long and covers a total of 3,330 sq.m. During recent years archaeological research has uncovered installations dating back to the Neolithic period in the interior of the cave.

Toget to the village of Melidoni, drive along the old road from Rethymno to Heraklion, turning left at the small town of Perama.

Perama is the regional centre, and it’s worth spending a couple of hours here to soak up the atmosphere of a small Cretan town that has been left untouched by tourism.

Located in Patelia, 1 km north west of the village of Sitanos, 25 km from Sitia. Its height is 610m above the see level. It occurs in Jurassic Limestone. Further north there are Pre-tertiary Filites, and north west and north east there are small masses of Dolmadic rock from the Tertiary period. Only 50m of the cave had been explored by the locals.

Vreiko Cave is located 5kms north from Pefki settlement and almost 12 kms far from the touristic resort of Makri Gialos.

Nowadays the cave is easily approachable because of the new, but narrow, asphalted road. At the end of the road you will leave your vehicle and you will walk about 800 metres on a clear-sighted path to the entrance of the cave.
