Island - The Current Excavations
A: Main Settlement

The project had four general goals when it began in 1989: 1) to continue excavation on the island of Mochlos in order to obtain a detailed stratigraphic sequence of occupation through the Early, Middle and Late Bronze Age with artifactual and ecofactual remains;

Itanos flourished in the historic Greek and Roman period. It was established in the Prehellenic period. Itanos became powerful and wealthy from conducting trade with Syria, Palestine and Libya. The city had its own coins and buildings covered with marble.

The minute, barren cliff-bound coastal island of Pseira (modern Gk. Psira) in the Gulf of Mirabella in northeastern Crete is a Minoan site that was explored in 1906–07 by Richard Seager and partially documented by Halvor Bagge in ink and watercolors based on photographs (University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, 1910), and more minutely examined in 1984–92 by Philip P. Betancourt and Costis Davaras, for Temple University.

Archaeological Site in Hamezi Sitia, East Crete:  In the Hamezi area, 11 km from Sitia on a conical-shaped hill known as Souvloto Mouri (which means pointed- or sharp - faced), is the only oval house so far discovered of the Middle Minoan period.

This is regarded as one of the most significant archaeological remains of the Minoan civilization.

Archaeological Site in Tripitos Sitia, East Crete:

Tripitos is a small peninsula sited 3 km from Sitia. An artificial shelter for ships dug in the rocks, has been found there and is dated from the Hellenistic period.

Archaeological Site in Agia Fotia Sitia, East Crete: This is an area of great archaeological interest because, in addition to various chance finds and signs of habitation in the cave of Koufoto on the shore, a large necropolis came to light near the cave (at a place now known as Patima).

252 graves of the early minoan period were discovered and it is estimated that another 50 must have been destroyed by cultivation of the surrounding land.

Archaeological Site in Koufonisi or Lefki, Makrigialos, East Crete:

This is a small island in the Libyan Sea off the south-eastern coast of Crete, or more eχactly, south-east of the Goudouras promontory near Makrigialos. Together with the islets of Makroulo, Strongilo, Trachila and Marmara it forms a close group.

Archaeological Site in Petras Sitia, East Crete

On a low hill (h. 40 m.) by the sea lies an important Minoan settlement. It had a large harbour and was the centre of an area bordered by Chamaizi on the west, Pressos on the south, and Analoukas on the east. Despite the evidence for habitation in the last phase of the Neolithic period (3500 B.C.), the first settlement is dated to the Early Minoan II period (2600-2300 B.C.).
