Dreros archaeological site. Agios Nikolaos, East Crete

Ancient DrerosDreros (modern Driros) near Neapolis in the district of Lassithi, Crete, is a post-Minoan archaeological site, 16 km. northwest of Aghios Nikolaos. Known only by a chance remark of the ninth-century Byzantine grammarian Theognostus (De orthographia), archaeology of the site shows Dreros to have been initially colonised by mainland Greeks in the early Archaic Period about the same time as Lato and Prinias.

Vrokastro archaeological site. Agios Nikolaos, East Crete

VrokastroThe coastal route from Aghios Nikolaos city, district of Lassithi,  to the village of Kavousi is very interesting. But the mountainous landscape to the south of this road hides some noteworthy places. The first is the Minoan settlement at Vrokastro, on a hill 1,500 metres south of the village of Istro.
