Chandakas (current city of Heraklion), after the Venetian occupation and settlement in 1211 (its name became Candia from the new settlers) developed into a very important centre of political, military, cultural and merchandise life of the whole island.

Mount Kedros (Greek: Όρος Κέντρος), is a mountain on the island of Crete in Greece. It is located southwest of the Ida massif with which it forms the two flanks of the Amari Valley. Mount Kedros is conical-shaped and made of limestone.

During the Venetian occupation (1204 - 1669), the need for the closer presence of Venetian navy in Crete and Chania obliged Venice to construct the "Neoria" (arsenal), a dockyard where the ships would be maintained during the winter.

During the Venetian and Turkish period, Chania presented a high development in commerce and marine mercantile. Not only in imports but also the export of various products was notable, despite the lack of a large and safe port.  Since this time, it was common knowledge that the port of Chania was vulnerable due to the weather conditions and for this reason it was not considered an appropriate port. The natural port of Souda, on the other hand, was in a much better position and was perfect for a port.

The grand Temple of the monks of the Dominican Order in Chania was built in about 1320 by the fraternity of Candia. Its architecture resembles the one of the Central Temple of Aghios Petros. The original monastery, as portrayed in old maps, images and descriptions, consisted of the temple with a high bell-tower and a two-floor arcade on the north side.

The most popular Byzantine monument in Crete (13th- 14th A.D.), it is located in Logari, one kilometre east of Kritsa, 9km far from Agios Nikolaos city, East Crete. This triple-nave Byzantine church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, to Saint Anthony and Saint Anna. It is adorned with superb wall paintings on particular themes like the representation of Saint Anna, other icons of the saints, and the fourteen scenes depicting the secret life of the Virgin Mary.

North of the town of Agios Nikolaos, East Crete on top of a small peninsula, the church of Saint Nikolaos, the oldest example of classic early Byzantine architecture, is located.

Kallergi Mountain Refuge is located on the western region of Crete, Chania Prefecture, above the plateau of Omalos, in the White mountains (Lefka Ori) mountain range at an altitude of 1680 meter. It is situated in an outstanding area of the longest gorge in Europe, named Samaria gorge and crossing paths with the European E4 trails.

The oldest refuge or mountain shelter in the White mountains (Lefka Ori) is on the Volika peak at an altitude of 1450 meters on the western region of Crete, Chania Prefecture, above the village of Kambi Keramion and was built in 1958.
