Taking the road Rethymnon-Koxare-Koutraliotiko gorge, five km from Plakias along a route with a panoramic view to the south coast and the surrounding mountains, we reach Mariou, a picturesque village built on the southern slope of Kouroupa.

Mirthios is a small village with 224 permanent residents built on the southern slope of the mountain "Kouroupa" (984m) with a panoramic view to the south coast, 36 km from the city of Rethymnon. It is the birthplace of the linguist George Hatzidakis and his brother John both wellknown university professors.

The village of Koxare is 23 km far from Rethymnon and 9 fom Plakias coastal village. It has 401 residents according to the 2001 census. The village lies in one of the most fertile regions of the hinterland. The lush green landscape of the Koxare plain (of olive trees) alternates with the wild and imposing landscape among the Atsipadiana Mountains or the mountains of Kouroupa, on the foot of which the village is built.

The village of Agouseliana lies 24 km south of Rethymnon and on a 350 m altitude between the Kourtaliotiko Gorge and Kotsifou gorge. It is built in a small valley which merges with the plain of Koxare. In the north, there is the hill of Kefala and in the south we see Atsipadiana.

The village of Mixorouma belongs to the Municipality of Lampis. It has 394 residents and lies on a 300 m altitude. It is 26.5 km far from Rethymnon and 4 km from Spili.

Mountros belongs to the Municipality of Fokas. It is 23 km far from Rethymnon on a 280 m altitude and has 216 residents. It is mentioned in all Venetian censuses of the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 1881 and 1900 censuses, it is mentioned in the municipality of Roustika, with approximately 370 residents. Since 1920 it has been mentioned with its own community.

The village is 27 km far from Rethymnon (intersection on the left on the 22,5th km of the old road to Hania-Zouridi-Kato Poros). It is on a 260 m altitude. In the 1981 census it was mentioned that the village had 87 residents.

Kanevos is located just before the entrance of the Kotsifou gorge at 450 m a.s.l. The village of Kanevos is 24 km far from Rethymnon and 7 fom Plakias coastal village.

Built at 460 m a.s.l.  Agios Ioannis is mentioned since 1577 from Fr Barozzi to be part of the county of Agios Vassilios. It is located very close to Kanevos village at the entrance of Kotsifou gorge and by a distance of 24 km from Rethymno city.
