A plethora of churches and monasteries was built in the Prefecture of Rethymno during both the early Christian and the Byzantine period. Byzantine churches amount to an estimated 300 and 30 monasteries.

The Monastery of Agia Irini is situated 5 kilometers far from Rethymnon town at the South, at a small distance before arriving to the village of Roussospiti. It is one of the older monasteries on the island.

The monastery of Kremasta, just like the monastery of Koufi Petra lies between the villages of Vrisses and Neapoli in Lassithi prefecture, not far from the main road Agios Nikolaos - Heraklion.

The Monastery of Koufi Petra is a new monastery near the town of Neapoli, Lassithi prefecture and is accessible from a junction on the road from Vrisses to Neapoli, not far from the main road Agios Nikolaos - Heraklion.

Monastery of Fraro or St. Anthony is located 1km west of Neapolis and 300m south of main road Agios Nikolaos - Heraklion. (see the map below).

The Holy Monastery of Vidiani, which seems to have taken its name from the owners of the land it was built on, the family of Vides (or Vidides), is situated close to the Northwestern entrance of the Lassithi Plateau, built within a stone cavity of the mountain Louloudaki.
