From the village Akoumia a 12 km long, narrow but marked and paved road winds through the mountains to a road, fine-grained and beautiful pebble beach, the 'Akoumia Beach', that only few tourists visit. The distance from Rethimno city is 50km. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area and presents a really unique view on the backside of the Triopetra Rocks.

Next to Ligres beach to the western side lies Katsouni Agalianos beach. It is total unorganized and there are some tourist facilities (rooms and tavernas) to be found in the nearby area of Ligres beach or Kerames - Agia Fotini Beach to west.

Gialopotamos is a nice and unknown beach in south Crete - Rethymno region, between Kerames-Agia Fotini and Preveli Beach. You can reach the beach from Kerames village.

The beaches of Kerames are found at a distance of 48 kilometers far from Rethymnon at the South, some 3-4 kilometers at the South of the homonymous village and at the East of the beaches of Gialopotamos and Preveli beach (only 4km far).

Situated at the southern coast of Crete, 39 kilometers far from Rethymnon at the South, very close to Preveli beach at the East, the beach of Drimiskianos is a sandy beach open to the southern winds, not very crowded.

At a distance of some 35 kilometers far from Rethymnon and 3 kilometers from the village Lefkogeia at the southern coast, it is found the sandy beach of Schinaria, well enough protected from the winds. The beach is relatively unknown to most locals, but for its few visitors it remains a heaven and they do not hesitate to rank it as the best beach of Crete.

Although Crete hosts one-quarter of Greece’s annual visitors, it’s still possible to escape the crowds by heading south. Thanks to the rugged mountains that stretch across much of the island’s spine, southern Crete remains a place apart.

Southwest from Matala is an area where other remarkable beaches are located (Vathi, Agiofaraggo), which all have a common trait their wild beauty and crystal clear, blue waters. Martsalo area is another inaccessible bay that can be reached only by foot thgrough Martsalo Gorge.

Vathy or Vathi beach: In the same area of Martsalo - Agiofarago - Red Beach Matala, you can also go to Vathy, a small beach caught between white cliffs, in the bottom of a spectacular fiord deeply entering into the land; one sheppard, one or two fishermen, and maybe a small snack during summertime...

Tripiti beach (and gorge) is located at an isolated area, 8km east from Lentas and 3km east of Trafoulas beach. To go to Tripiti beach, you can take the dirtroad that starts near Lendas harbor, heads toward Krotos village in the north and then turn right at the intersection that you’ll see about two kilometres later. (Marks: a stone hut and a sign that says “Tripiti, 3 km”).

Trafoulas or Psili ammos beach (and gorge) is located 4km east of Lendas (between the Village of Lentas and the Beach-Gorge of Tripiti to the East) and 69km south of Heraklion city. It is a completely isolated beach of south Crete, which is formed at the exit of a small canyon on the Cape Trafoulas or Trahilas ans is accessible only on foot or by boat from Lentas Village.

Plakias Souda is a beach 3 km west of Plakias village within the Plakias bay, 43 km southwest of Rethymnon; a lovely sandy beach, less crowded than the main beach of Plakias. The beach is well organized and affected by south winds. The rocky ends of the beach are ideal for snorkeling.

Kalamaki Beach is located on the southern side of Crete, very close to Matala and Agia Galini and few hundreds meters north from Kommos or Commos Beach. It is know for its extremely long beach of 2 kilometres as well as its protected areas for the Kareta Kareta turtles.

The islands Paksimadia and Gavdos can be seen in the horizon. The uninhabited Paksimadia is around 10 kilometres away from the shore and owe their name to the dryness that dominates on the island.
