The E4 path, that crosses Crete from west to east, follows this stretch of coast. Four days would be required in order to reach Sfakia from Paleochora. Paleochora, Sougia and Sfakia have a daily bus service, and other villages are linked by ferry boats, therefore the trek can be divided into several one-day walks, except for the stretch between Sougia and Agia Roumeli that requires two days (11-12 hours walk).

The village Manoliopoulo belongs to the municipality Platanias, Kydonia, with 265 residents (1981), at an altitude of 120 meters and 20km away from Chania Town.

Gramvousa island is one of the small satelite islands of Crete. It is situated on the north west side of the island and can be reached by boat in about an hour from the town of Kastelli Kissamos.

The walk up to Anidri Village from Paleochora is beautiful, the old church in Anidri has interesting frescoes, and the taverna, which used to be the village school, has good food and a marvellous view.

Crete´s highest mountain stands in the middle of the island. It is the Psiloritis - also called the Ida mountain.

The massif, covering an area of about 359 km2 consists of several mountain peaks and plateaus - with the Nida plateau as the largest and best known.

The race start point is Nida's plateau, the highest plateau in Crete (average altitude, 1400 m.) The name comes from the articulation of the words "stin Ida", meaning "at Ida", where Ida is the second name of Ida - Psiloritis mountain. The view of the plateau and the feeling that’s created from all the infertile summits around you, trying to reach up the sky, makes right inside you the reason why the spirit of the cretan man transmuted to a deity, why Zeus connected his name with that area…Nida of myths.

Ascent to the peak of Psiloritis or Idi (2.456 m.)

To the peak of the highest mountain of Crete with the strange wild beauty, the sanctuary in ancient times where Zeus was born and had been the home of Kourites and Ideon Dactylon, someone can get to by beginning from Vistagi (or Bistai), a village which mainly is involved in farming and stockbreeding and is located in its south foot.

The “trail of Mygia’s” is an easy walking track for all the family where one could see, in a rather short time all the natural beauties of Psiloritis Mountain. It is a rather easy track just next to the village of Anogeia along the route towards the Nida plateau that combines the geologic with the environmental and anthropogenic features of Psiloritis.

The proposed route is (partly) done by car and offers a small tour to the impressive agricultural landscapes of Crete and to the sacred sites of the region of Venerato area.

The route begins from the road running parallel to the beach to the east of Paleochora. We follow an asphalt road as far as the crossroads to Anydri, where we continue moving east, a little way above the sea on a dirt road which ends at the beautiful deserted beach of Gialiskari.
