Frangokastello (the castle of the Franks: this Castle was built in 1371, during the four and a half centuries of Venetian rule) is a charming, peaceful and traditional village on the south coast of Crete, 12km east from Chora Sfakion and 20km west of Plakias, and offers splendid sandy beaches. The water is getting deepen very slowly, so this is the ideal spot for parents to let their children play in the sea. Even 50 meters outside in the sea the water is only knee deep. Located on the south coast of the region of Chania, very close to Fragokastello fortress, there are three different beaches in the same area. In addition to the pebbly beach to the west and the family friendly beach in front of the castle, there is the "Orthi Ammos" sandy beach 500m east of the castle. Trafoulas or Trahoulas or Psili ammos beach (and gorge) is located 4km east of Lendas (between the Village of Lentas and the Beach-Gorge of Tripiti to the East) and 69km south of Heraklion city. It is a completely isolated beach of south Crete, which is formed at the exit of a small canyon on the Cape Trafoulas or Trahilas ans is accessible only on foot or by boat from Lentas Village. Tripiti beach (and gorge) is located at an isolated area, 8km east from Lentas and 3km east of Trafoulas beach. To go to Tripiti beach, you can take the dirtroad that starts near Lendas harbor, heads toward Krotos village in the north and then turn right at the intersection that you’ll see about two kilometres later. (Marks: a stone hut and a sign that says “Tripiti, 3 km”). Kedrodasos is a few hundred metres west of Elafonissi beach in west Crete and 77km far from Chania City, one of the most beautiful beaches. A hidden paradise for many years since only few knew how to actually get there. A fantastic place to camp and enjoy some serenity away from the thousands of tourists who invade nearby Elafonissi. This magical uninhabited island is just 18km from the resort of Makrigialos, Makrygialos, Makriyalos, on the south east coast of Crete, close to Goudouras (7km). This island can be reached by boat from Makrigialos Harbour daily throughout the summer from about the middle of May, weather permitting. There are some remains of roman and minoan civilisation on the island.
Kalamaki Beach is located on the southern side of Crete, very close to Matala and Agia Galini and few hundreds meters north from Kommos or Commos Beach. It is know for its extremely long beach of 2 kilometres as well as its protected areas for the Kareta Kareta turtles. The islands Paksimadia and Gavdos can be seen in the horizon. The uninhabited Paksimadia (or Paximadia) is around 10 kilometres away from the shore and owe their name to the dryness that dominates on the island. 1,5km after Pitsidia and 4km before Matala, a branch of the road leads to Kommos, the ancient port of Phaistos and one of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Crete. It is a magnificent sun-drenched stretch of sand, one of the largest in Crete, which extends from a clump of rocks riveted in the shallow waters in the south to the Kalamaki settlement in the North.
Glyka or Glika Nera beach (Sweet Water) is one of the loveliest beaches in Crete, with no umbrellas or other facilities but with clear blue-green waters in which to cool off after the hot sun. The sea here is quite cold, due to the icy mountain water that rises in the sea and the sand. The beach is located between Loutro village and Chora Sfakion.
Marmara beach is located about 1 hour's walk to the West of Loutro. It was named Marmara (marble) beach because of the smooth white blocks of lime stone next to it. The other interesting beach of Loutro area is Glika Nera beach to the east of Loutro. There is also a boat from Loutro to Marmara. There is no hotel at Marmara, just a restaurant. Marmara may become crowded in July / August.
Pheonix or Finikas is a small beach between Marmara beach and Loutro Village. Situated some 82 kilometers far from Chania at the South and 1-2 kilometers at the West of Loutro, within a small cove, Phoenix is a pebbly beach with a rocky seabed very good for snorkelling and affected only by the southern winds. Few facilities of lodging and food and drink are offered to the visitors. Situated at the southern side of the Asterousia mountains with a distance of more than 85 kilometres far from Heraklion at the South - Southeast and some 20 kilometres far from Tsoutsouros and 15 km from Maridaki beach-village, Aghios Nikitas is a pebbly beach affected by the winds; what is interesting is the palm tree wood, fortunately still unknown to big crowds. |
